Description

'Would you like some cake?' is a large donut shaped knitted steel wire sculpture. The work is suspended from the ceiling by clear heavy weight fishing line. It has been created using a bending jig (a bespoke tool made by the artist), a spinning jenny, and bolt cutters which were used to cut the wire. Tania Spencer lives and works rurally in Western Australia and often works with recycled and found materials. Spencer considers the knitted wire as a metaphor for how we are linked together, each stitch depending on the other for support. The interlinked lace areas and holes reflect the degrees of closeness or distance that we have in families (estranged or not) and friends (maybe long lost or current).
