Description

'Perspectives Shift' is a pith cane sculptural work created for 'Momentum: 18th Tamworth Fibre Textile Biennial'. It follows Fiona Gavino’s previous body of work exploring identity. The artist described the work as follows: 'The collective history of a culture is the parent of the present mainstream paradigm. Mono-tonal ideas of identity perpetuated by popular culture inadvertently create the ‘alien others’. Inwardly Outbound re-constructs the paradigm; the Diaspora of the marginalised is given strength to challenge the typical. The sculptures reject the spectacularisation of a consumer-based society. Truth seemingly becomes as ambiguous as a discarded piece of rubbish. Perspectives shift, the inside becomes out.'
