Description

In this quintessentially Australian bush scene a bushman with a hat pulled down low over his face sits on the step of a timber shack smoking a pipe. A dog lies with his ears pricked up to one side. In this small etching by Lionel Lindsay the scene is brought to life with an economical use of line. The title and scene suggest the man is getting on in years and is down on his luck - through symbols such as the elongated shadows of the afternoon sun, the title ‘Sunday Camp’ and the upside down horseshoe at the side of the door.
