Description
This small, unfinished oil painting of a shorn sheep is from a series of similar works known as the ‘Studies of Travelling Sheep’. John Salvana included unfinished artworks in the collection he donated to the Borough of Tamworth in 1919 so that students could gain a better understanding of how a painting or drawing is constructed. These artwork are such examples. Salvana’s dream was to provide a rural centre with an art gallery, so that young children and those with an interest in art might be encouraged to study it, and to learn from viewing original artworks at first hand. The artwork in progress demonstrates the method and process used to paint in oils.
