Description
This small scale oil painting on canvas uses short, considered, textured brushstrokes to capture the beauty of a scene near Gunnedah in North Eastern New South Wales.
In this work, John Salvana has used an interesting palette including flecks of orange to convey the warm, filtered light of a warm day. The red river gum’s branches span the work, creating a natural frame for the composition. Patches of luminous green grass indicate recent rains but the parched billabong suggest dry times to come. Salvana has employed a sfumato-like technique to soften the distant landscape, suggesting a heat haze and allowing the viewer to create an imagined composition in the distance.
