Description

This small black and white etching depicts a favourite theme of Hans Heysen. He was interested in capturing the hard grind of farm labourers and animals in the Adelaide Hills, around the town of Hahndorf, where he lived from 1908. A similar subject is caught in the ‘The Toilers', a watercolour painting in the Art Gallery of South Australia Collection. In that painting it has been ascertained that the two draught horses, Polly and Jack, belonged to ‘Old Kramm’, the farmer who came regularly to do the ploughing at the Heysen property ‘The Cedars’.
