Description

Giovanni Vianello’s 'The Proposal’ is distinctively Italian and designed for popular appeal - probably to the tourist seeking a souvenir of their travels. An attractive young woman holding a fan in her left hand is seated on a chair beside a table with her right forearm resting on the table, her right hand holding a red rose. She glances coquettishly up at the young man who is bending over her, right hand resting on the back of the chair, his left hand touching his breast, no doubt enunciating a proposal of marriage. The setting is a parlour and still-life details (such as a basket of washing or mending on a chair and a group of plate, bottle and jug on a sideboard) along with the bright colours and clothing worn by the couple add a decorative Italian flavour. It is in a wooden frame with gesso and gold leaf over gold paint.
