Description

Conrad Martens had an intense, Turneresque interest in atmospheric conditions and states of weather, but he was a romantic at heart. His observations could be very exact but he also chose romantic landscapes. Sydney and its harbour provided him with romantic themes and in them he realised his full potential. Apart from works stemming from his regional travels, the theme of Sydney Harbour occupied Martens consistently over a period of 35 years. This painting displays Martens spacious skies which have impressed many an artist from the northern hemisphere and his pearly luminous finish. Martens training almost certainly ended in 1816 when he moved to Exeter from London. He painted Devonshire landscapes for the next 16 years then went to India and on a later voyage arrived in Sydney, April 1835. Until his death in 1878, Martens lived and worked in Sydney.
