Description
There are three paintings of the Brisbane River by John Salvana in the Tamworth Regional Gallery Collection and it was clearly a subject that interested the artist. The river threads its way through Brisbane, its serpentine reaches making it ever-present in the geography and navigation of the city. The effects of water and light are treated in an Impressionistic style with the long shadows of afternoon and the sky reflected in the slow moving water. The orange/red mast of a white dinghy stands out against the blues, greens and greys of the water and sky, while echoing the colours at the left side of the composition on the shore.
